Where do you start?  Document everything! Starting with you.  Build back from there.  

The important part is to start.  Ask lots of questions!  You can always do impromptu interviews with family members. I usually do this during the holidays. Just simple questions such as, "How did you spend holidays as a family when you were young?" "What were some of your favorite things you did as a child?" etc can easily start long conversations about your family history.
